Crispy noodle and Prawn rolls. These were pretty killer actually.

Fried pork rolls.

Actually posting this is killing me. I am drooling thinking about it. Too delicious.

PARIS: AKI BOULANGERIE

September 12th, 2012 | Posted by The Booyah Cook in Paris | Restaurant - (0 Comments)

When I have to go to Paris for work, I always stay at the same hotel.  Just down the road is a Japanese French Boulangerie called Aki and inside you will see some of the most amazing things in the world. As far as Boulangeries go, Aki Boulangerie is the top of my list. Not to be confused with Sadaharu Aoki of course which is a patisserie. At Aki Boulangerie you can get this wonderful Matcha Muffins and Matcha Buns stuffed with white chocolate. You can also get strawberry buns or caramel buns and a whole other list of muffins too. There is more traditional bread, the most beautiful looking fig buns and something that they don’t do at Sadaharu Aoki; YUZU ECLAIRS. Which I am sure are divine but I didn’t get one cause I know the time will come when Anthony is with me and he will be double fisting the eclair array.

As all the staff at Aki Boulangerie are Japanese (it is really weird speaking French with someone who has a Japanese accent for me BTW) even the drink selection has a very Japanese flavour. I got to try this:

Some Melon Creamy Soda. It wasn’t very creamy but it was very melony! Haha.

Okay and last but not least about Aki Boulangerie, just down the road is a massive (for French standards) Japanese supermarket and a shop selling these:

The traditional.

And the not so traditional!

Japanese Star Wars Textiles. Sadly for the French / Japanese economy the shop was shut because I think I would bought them all to make a dress (and I never even saw a Star Wars movie) but I love the traditional blossoms with the characters. It looks really cool!

GREENWICH: THE OLD BREWERY

September 4th, 2012 | Posted by The Booyah Cook in London | Restaurant - (0 Comments)

This post is long overdue but I thought in view of all the Madrid information I should be posting some stuff about London again.

About a year and a half ago, Anthony and I spent the weekend in Greenwich so we could visit both The Greenwich Union and the “parent” place, The Old Brewery for dinner. For those who don’t know, Meantime is British brewery based in Greenwich. I am sure that a lot of you have seen their beer in the supermarkets and a lot of different cafes and restaurants.

The menu has different beers from the brewery matched, the service in the restaurant was amazing and the staff knowledgeable about the beer, how each is made. Also about the food.

It must be about time to go back there again.

LONDON: MASON & TAYLOR

September 3rd, 2012 | Posted by The Booyah Cook in London | Restaurant - (0 Comments)

MASON AND TAYLOR ARE NOW CLOSED AND BREW DOG ARE TAKING OVER. :(

The first time I went to Mason & Taylor, Anthony and I had a row because he was driving, I was starving, he didn’t want to go to a place where he couldn’t drink beer freely if he wanted because he was driving. Anyway sulks over, we went it and it was really great.

I can’t pretend I know loads about beer. What I do know I know from Anthony. Although now I can list a few places to go if some of your friends are really into beer and some of your friends aren’t or are curious to taste different types. All the beer stocked is from independent breweries from around the world – but having said that, many of the beers are local.

Mason & Taylor is the first place I drank Marble Ginger – which in my opinion is the best alcoholic ginger beer. After that is a Tesco’s brand one actually that’s good. But what is really good at Mason & Taylor is that you can get a flight – three thirds of beer from those on tap and have a little taste session. Equally, they will let you have a little taster before you order a whole pint of something.

They also do decent food as you would expect any pub these days would do. But the best thing about it is the variety of beers.

MADRID: OUR BEST FRIENDS

September 1st, 2012 | Posted by The Booyah Cook in Restaurant | Travel - (0 Comments)

Okay already there have been loads of pictures from Madrid I know. So – here are our “make friends with the locals pics” for your personal attention.

Here is Anthony at the German bar where all the Spanish waitresses were wearing dirndls. They didn’t even do tapas. Just pretzels and sausages.

A bit like hanging out with Hobart really.

Oh God. Looking at that bull and thinking about blood I just realised I forgot completely about one last restaurant in Madrid called El Buey.

Okay so El Buey means “The Ox”. Which I think sums the whole place up pretty well.

The tan ceramic plate in front of me was so hot from the oven you could cook the think slices of steak on it. You order the meat for your table by weight – 750g is apparently right for two people. Look at it. It was  both fun and delicious. Again, apologies to all vegetarians out there. Unfortunately we did not burn ourselves so you cannot take pleasure in knowing there was pain and retribution for eating animals.

This was pretty booyah.

MADRID: ALKALDE RESTAURANT

August 30th, 2012 | Posted by The Booyah Cook in Restaurant | Travel - (0 Comments)

On a stinking hot day at the moment where you know you have to eat and no-one can make up their mind and you have to make a decision before the vibe gets agro and suddenly you smell something delicious coming from down the road. So you follow your nose, sit down thinking “Great, what a relief. We found somewhere.” Then the waiter puts the menu in front of you and you realise you are about to have the most expensive lunch of your life.

Welcome to Alkalde.

Now having said that, it was probably the most exceptional meal of the whole trip. Also having said that, possibly when I was someone’s guest at Le Prevot in Iles Sur La Sorge, France that was more expensive because there was a lot wine involved. Anyway here is how we spent our money in Madrid…

Anthony and I shared a salad as starter – anchovy and avocado salad. We were laughing cause they were the fattest, biggest juiciest anchovies either of us had ever seen – and Hobart would still have run off with the lettuce. Shame there is no picture so we could have asked her when we got home. She has been in the foulest mood since I returned.

Roe buck in chocolate sauce accompanied by something we think could be apple and chestnut. Though didn’t think to ask!

“Tuna in citrics” with fennel. I think marinaded in lemon and lime. This was really an incredible piece of fish.

Then we shared a dessert. This is Curd with walnut sauce. I hate walnuts but even I have to say this was brilliant. The curd I guess is set with gelatin (or agar agar) but I have no idea how the sauce is made. Any clues anyone please let me know. Anthony was well chuffed that I only wanted a taste.

Our pics of the food do not do it justice. You should check it out on the restaurant website (link below).

Good to know that this place is open every day and open uninterrupted through the day. And yes it still has those same gross misty cool water misters that are everywhere. Makes me think I will get TB if the water touches me.

Talk about celebrity spotting, here is Bernie Winters on our second visit to Daniela on our Madrid holiday.

A shame you cant really see the egg. The yokes were PERFECT and runny. I felt very British eating this like I was in Ibiza.

Anthony ate his own weight in morcilla. Sorry for the gruesome meat pics Bev. I kept thinking about you all holiday!

The waitress remembered me from last time and knew which dessert I wanted!

BTW who is that guy in the background? Anthony’s phone tagged him as Sylvester Stallone.

Any, for some culture and less food, here is a picture from earlier in the day:

This is Plaza de Colon and this flag is the biggest “a Rojigualda” in Spain. Anthony looks like a midget next to it.

MADRID: TEN CON TEN

August 30th, 2012 | Posted by The Booyah Cook in Restaurant | Travel - (0 Comments)

I came here once before on work related issued and saw a woman with ringlets in head to foot Chanel and matching Chanel straw boater. She had a lot of work. Someone told me some gossip about her – like she keeps the Chanel shop in Madrid open or something but I don’t know.

So that is one thing I think about when I think of Ten Con Ten. The other is their Ceviche.

Obviously, Ten Con Ten is pretty chi-chi because you can tell by the mood lighting so we just used camera phones. Def not the place to flash the fuck out of your food. On the other hand, not the kind of place you have to really dress up. Men in pants and a polo shirt acceptable with clean trainers. And obvs if you want to dress up like Chanel lady, DO IT.

The ceviche here was (what was the fish Anthony?) on pumpkin.

Burrata, strawberry, grape and tomato salad. I have made Anthony promise to make this for me. And so ladies night!

Black cod and caramelised apple. Anthony’s choice. He said it was beautifully cooked but found it a little bland after the salad and wished he had chosen something more punchy. But it was an excellent dish.

This was a “hamburger” made up from the most mouthwatering sweet and tender oxtail meat. It kind of disintegrated as soon as you touched it – if you put it in a bun it would be more of a sloppy joe. But the mash of meat, fries and gravy was awesome. Anthony didn’t even want to taste it at first because he said that ox tail meat was the kind of meat you had to eat when you were poor like offal. I will leave him to “flesh that out” in full later. Haha.

Turron ice cream – possibly the world’s greatest ice cream?

Yogurt with lime and honey. Anthony died and went to heaven.

So when it came to make the booking I had my doubts – no-one spoke English and then kept putting the phone down and thought I was making a booking for 10 and not two. Once that was over with, we arrived two nights later to be greeted and shown to our seats. The staff were really friendly and happy to explain the menu – which is also in English. Personally I think it is worth getting the menu in Spanish as well because some dishes likes Iles flottantes are French anyway and sound awful translated on the English menu. Anyway loads of staff spoke English and were happy to let us bumble the few Spanish words we knew.

Our only complaint about the whole evening was the naff pop/dance music they were playing – the restaurant is really beautiful, well lit, cosy in different rooms, waiters all dressed well and the music seems really at odds with the scene. It didnt wreck the night by any means but you probably wouldnt want to propose to someone in there! Or maybe you would? Perhaps there is something I am missing these days.

Also, nice cocktails.

PARIS: LES ENFANTS PERDUS

August 12th, 2012 | Posted by The Booyah Cook in Paris | Restaurant - (1 Comments)

Oh Hai. It’s me. Rip Van Winkle who has come to life a bit after thousands of years to give you two posts in a row.

I don’t have any better quality pictures than this but this is my favourite restaurant in Paris (maybe) (I think probably). If you are totes over Hotel du Nord, just cross the canal and come here.

I think this is something like goats cheese ravioli in beef broth and some kind of pate with brioche toast. Other memorable meals were a while ago so I can’t remember all the gorey details but I do remember the best dessert of my life, and Goon’s and I think probably Anthony’s as well.

ME: Grapefruit segments in syrup with lime sorbet and mint

ANTHONY: Three mini creme brulée – one vanilla, one hazelnut and one pistachio.
Hang on it is coming back to me – for a started he had asparagus wrapped in a fine fine layer of pastry and then we both had cod and leek for our main dish.

GOON: Le Pain Perdu with caramalised brioche, caramel sauce and marshmallow icecream.

Booyah.

LONDON: JEN CAFE

August 12th, 2012 | Posted by The Booyah Cook in Restaurant | Soho - (0 Comments)

You have to share tables, a total no frills place, not sure how many surfaces the cloth wipes down before it gets to your table, hardly translated menu BUT I LOVE IT. Loads of people complain about this place for being a bit ordinary (so go to Yautcha fussy pants), but for quick dinner on the way home after work this place is it. CHECK OUT THE TEA MUG. If you’re lucky, the woman will be standing right in the window making the dumplings super fast (much faster than when I have ever made them).

Taberna La Daniela wasn’t too far from my hotel and I didn’t feel two much of a loser there eating on my own – so I went there two nights in a row just from the white asparagus and “brie” on toast. So just so you understand, I didn’t stuff myself with ALL of this in one go. It was two very lazy and comfortable sittings.

This is the stinkiest blue cheese I ever had in my life. Queso de Cabrales – or the Cabrales part is a name protected by Euro law and only cheeses made in this way from the North of Spain are allowed to be called Cabrales. It can also be a mixed milk cheese and in this case was super tangy, stinky and AMAZING especially with the caramelised apple on the top. Just thinking about it I am salivating.

Iberico ham and tomato.

Local naked ladies in neon pink fishnets.

On the left Quails eggs and chorizo, on the right, the thing I came back twice for white asparagus and brie.

No-one really spoke English, but the menus were in English as well as Spanish so all was good. As you can see I most definitely didn’t go hungry.

Most of the “canapes” as they called them were €3.50 if you ate them at the bar, but at the table were €4.50.

This dessert was a sorbet and champagne. On a warm night it was most delish! When I go back to Madrid next, I will visit again for sure.

PARIS: PARIS BREST

July 8th, 2012 | Posted by The Booyah Cook in Paris | Restaurant - (0 Comments)

At Les Fines Gueules restaurant in Paris after a heritage tomato salad (They are very trendy these days aren’t they. They should just get better tomatoes in the shops so we can have these very day) and a Pave Steak and potato I could only manage to stuff down half of this gigantic Paris Brest.

These are made with choux pastry and praline filling and were invented for a snack in the 1800′s for a Parisian bike race.

This restaurant was very nice, great service etc. The menu was very high standard comfort food – meat, potatoes etc. Was nice to sit at the bar and talk to the sommelier about what glass of wine to have next. If you are staying near and you need something to eat on a Sunday night, not a bad option. Don’t go out of your way though.

YORK : MELTONS

June 10th, 2012 | Posted by The Booyah Cook in Restaurant - (0 Comments)

I don’t have any pictures, except for one of Anthony sitting in bed in a big white robe drinking coffee which I have been banned from posting because he is too shy (no nudity but he looks like a Bond villain!), BUT sorry long sentence Anthony and I went to York the other weekend and had a great time. We stayed at the Hotel Du Vin and I have to say the website doesn’t do the place justice. Our room was really comfortable, lots of trees and very peaceful. In the main house was the bar (had a great Mandarin Negroni) and real ale on tap for those who care.

We didn’t eat at the hotel, we read mixed reviews – although I am surprised because we had breakfast the next day and it was brilliant. Instead we walked down the road to Melton’s and had a really outstanding dinner. Maybe I am an ignorant Australian but who would have known you can eat like this in York?

This was my starter – Chicken liver pate with grapes and walnuts.

Anthony’s salmon. I cant remember – I have a feeling there was horseradish involved.

Woo hoo. I had Hake, celeriac, hazelnuts etc. Delish.

But check this out – Chicken, parsley mash, pickled apple, black pudding and cider gravy. I think Anthony won. Even with the black pudding.

Anthony’s coconut rice pudding

A delicious lemon souffle with a second rate lemon curd ice cream. Had it been elderflower I think I would have been very happy. The souffle was TALL!

I think this weekend I had the best lunch I have had for a long time, at chef David Kennedy’s Food Social. In NEWCASTLE.

Anthony had Button, St George and Fairy Ring mushroom soup

This is my “Spring” roll of goat’s curd and salad. Amazing Amazing.

Slow cooked Pork Belly, celeriac and morels.

This was my Nicoise salad with baked hake. CAN YOU SEE THAT POACHED EGG?! It was perfect.

Rhubard tart and Elderflower ice cream. Have you see such delightful pastry? The ice cream was wonderful. I don’t know why more people don’t make it.

And Anthony’s Creme Brulée.

The room was really nice, you can get up and have a look in The Biscuit Factory gallery between courses if your companions are boring, the service was impeccable. I will be begging Anthony to take me every time we go up North.

BETTYS HARROGATE

May 26th, 2012 | Posted by The Booyah Cook in Restaurant - (0 Comments)

I got taken to Betty’s for afternoon tea last weekend on the way up to Sunderland. I was so excited!

Betty’s was opened in the 20s by a Swiss man and on the menu are all sorts of things like roesti which I wouldn’t mind trying some other time.

Frankly – although beautifully filled and cut, the sandwiches weren’t much cop. Or maybe I expect to much from a sandwich? Bread was okay, fillings a little tasteless. I have had better Pret A Manger sandwiches than this.

VERY GOOD SCONE

Best raspberries on a tart I have had, very nice filling, short pastry but wasn’t very crisp or delicate. Anthony scoffed the coffee cake and the lemon one. I was too full.

Now – all of that might sound like it wasn’t great – it really was. I am totally seduced by pretty plating and silverware. I will even have a crappy old banana éclair from you know where in Soho if it is served on a doily.

In the background of all that you can probably see Anthony eating a Caesar Salad which he said was great.

Then I asked the trolley lady “What exactly is a Yorkshire Tart?”

Et voila:

This pastry was perfect. A Yorkshire tart is a cheesecake made from fresh curd with currants and the pastry brushed inside with lemon curd.
